The Boy Who Dared is a unique historical fiction about a boy and his experience with the rise of Hitler and the Nazi power. We watch him grow up with the political group and watch how his opinions developed. We get to see how world war two impacts not only the German government but the people. the story is based on a boy name Helmuth. (Warning: spoilers) As he is growing up he watches huge debates on whether Hitler is going to bring good or destruction to Germany. It is not until his brother gets shipped off to war that he chooses a side. From that day on he finds small ways to protest the government without being caught by the Gestapo. (The Gestapo was the official secret police of Nazi Germany.) If you know your history you would know that it was illegal to listen to foreign radio stations in Nazi Germany. Helmuth ignores this and is able to find a radio station broadcasting from London. "They sit in the dark, the small flat lit only by the dim light of the radio, and listen to the British voices pulsing across the crackling airwaves. It's thrilling, too, to know you are breaking the Nazi law." This quote shows he isn't supporting the Nazis and thinks it exciting to break their laws. Through this, he figures out that Germany is losing the war and feels the need to tell his friends. After a while friend rats him out to the Gestapo, he is sentenced to death row. Even though he knew he was going to be killed he continued his protest. In this story, Helmuth shows us to be brave and fight for what we think is right.

'The Boy Who Dared' is a historical fiction book by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. we follow a boy name Helmuth, and his story during the beginning of the first World War. we get see the steps that lead to World War 2 and how it affected the citizens. We can relate this book to our present day world in a few ways. We can see history repeating itself.
Today we are watching terrorist groups, north Korea, China, and Iran begin to disagree with the Western democracies. We see them take aggressive or violent actions instead of a peaceful protest. Terrorists groups begin to form as a form of protest. Okay yeah I( know what you are thinking, "yeah okay but how does that relate to World War 2. Well Vladimir Putin (the president of Russia) has assessed this situation the same was Josef Stalin did in the 1930's. They both tried to cut deals with these problem causing countries out of assumption that to deals would later cause issues a would hurt Russia more than it would help it. The Boy who Dared is a historical fiction book by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. It takes you back to Germany 1932. In this book we follow the life of a young boy named Helmuth, grow up with the Nazi party who is slowly taking control over him and is town. Even though the book is fiction, it still very much does give us peeks into what Nazi Germany was really like. Towards the beginning of the book we get to see what Helmuth experienced when Hitler was elected chancellor. He was at school when the man came into power. We watch a huge debate break out among the teachers. (page 14 first paragraph) "And so the argument goes, back and forth, among the teachers." Some argue that Hitler will bring Germany out of its misery while others think he will bring war and shame. There was very much was the same debate in real life. Not everyone in Germany supported Hitler. His mother does not get paid well and sometimes has a hard time supporting her family. She believes that Hitler will help her hand her family. His grandparents on the other hand consider Hitler a nutjob. Helmuth hopes to one day fight for his country with a swastika band on his arm but is unsure about Hitler. (page 10 second paragraph)"If he we're a solider, he would fight bravely for Germany. He knows he would. He wouldn't be afraid." This shows how willing he is to fight for his country. Introduction The homeless are a big part of our community and the number of homeless people is increasing. They are all around us sleeping in sketchy alleyways some even in abandoned buildings. Most homeless live off of $5 or less for food and water. We don't pay any attention to them. Most of us only give change, some don't give anything being afraid they might spend it on alcohol or drugs. That is a possibility so instead of money some give food, which is not a bad thing every little thing helps. There are currently more than 4000 people living without homes, food, or clean water in wake county. This issue is very personal to me, my mother used to be homeless. I wasn't born during this time but my sister was. My mother sometimes tells me stories about sleeping on the cold concrete because she was not allowed to sleep in parks on the grass. During the time my mother had my sister she was living in a homeless shelter. This got my mother back on track with her life. There was also this homeless man that used to be around our house we would give him food sometimes. I remember feeling really sorry for him. Some people might think homeless people are not good people or there sketchy but all the homeless people I have met are actually really nice and just need help. Everyone should care because this can happen to anyone. Imagine if you were put in this situation without a home and food. Sleeping outside in the cold with an empty stomach and if you have kids it's even worse. There are lots of homeless women with kids out there so at least care about the children. The homeless are people too so if you don't care about another humans life that's pretty insensitive. Just imagine how you would feel if you were looked down upon like garbage every day. The Issue The Problem is that there are over 4000 homeless in NC and there are many reasons why. One of the many reasons is poverty. Despite 6% of Raleigh population and with the rate 1 in 6 people live paycheck to paycheck (Raleigh Rescue Mission 2018). They do not have money to buy the necessary items they need. Another reason is the high cost of kids. Having to buy the needs of a child can get expensive. It takes $1025 a month on average to afford rental (Rent Jungle, December 2017) Another reason is domestic abuse, many people leave because of the violence; illness. disaster is another reason. Both of these can really burn a hole in your wallet. Released from jail with nowhere to turn to some because of their past history they are left out in the streets. And here are some fact that are also a problem.(Raleigh Rescue Mission 2018) 1 in every 30 children experience homelessness 83% of children are exposed to violence Life expectancy on the streets are 46 years 1,300 coats, hats, and other winter clothing items distributed in Raleigh Rescue Mission These are all problems in the community that homeless people have and some good that Raleigh rescue does. Solution There are many ways to help the homeless. Some people host food drives in some parts of Raleigh to give essentials to the homeless and help them to take care of their personal needs. People will raise money and donate stuff to the homeless shelter to give stuff to the homeless people. They raise food, clothes and other items for homeless shelters to provide some stuff for the people to be taken care of well. This can help a homeless person get back on their feet and get a new start. Some homeless don’t have clothes and have to wear the same clothes for days. They don't have what they need to get a job to provide for them or even their families. Some people will give tours to help homeless see what jobs may be available for them and help them get a job. There are some people are giving money to help them. We try to donate enough so every so homeless has a chance to get back on their feet. Possible Service Ideas Helping a homeless person can mean a lot. It can give them hope that people care and that they may have a bright future. Our idea for our service project is to donate to a homeless shelter. Our plan is to set up a stand in front of a grocery store for the day and ask for donations. This would require a table and a few posters. I think we could set up a few groups at different grocery stores. This way we may be able to gather more donations. We would be asking for people to donate Toothpaste, Dental Floss, Band-Aids, Underwear, Neosporin Cortisone Cream, Cotton Swabs, Listerine, Deodorant, Razors, Nail Clippers, Baby Wipes, Thick Socks, Batteries, Feminine hygiene products. These are the most recommended products to donate to homeless by the HSD (HSD homeless website homeless shelter directory 2016). We could also make small thank you cards or tokens in thanks of their donations. After a while of gathering donations, we could all meet up at a homeless shelter and give them our donations. This would be our way of helping the homeless Bibliography - “Homelessness statistics, “Raleigh Rescue Mission.” Raleigh Rescue Mission. 2018. 1-24-18. https://www.raleighrescue.org/homelessness/local-statistics/ Things to donate to the homeless, HSD. published 2006. 1-24-18. https://www.homelessshelterdirectory.org/cgi-bin/id/article.cgi?article=14 Rent trend data in raleigh, North Carolina, rent jungle. 2017. 1-31-18 https://www.rentjungle.com/average-rent-in-raleigh-rent-trends/ Homelessness has become a problem in our world today. It is one of those problems that we are not going to be able to be fixed but it can be helped. The issue In North Carolina, the percentage of homeless americans has increased 8% in the past 8 years. The homeless population mostly consist of homeless men (56%) and is followed up by veterans (18%), single women (18%), and 8% unannounced. 1 out of every 4 homeless are veteran; someone who risked their life to protect our country. Most commonly a person will be evicted from their house because of addiction or mental/physical issues. This links back to why so many homeless people are veterans. Many veterans are scared by what they saw and experienced in action. A lot of the time they will try and use drugs or alcohol to try and forget those memories. This can lead to addiction causing them to be evicted from their houses. Solution A common way people help is by providing housing for homeless. To do this you will need to have the right materials. Fist of all you obviously need space to let them stay. You will need enough food for you, your family, and the homeless person ( and their family if they have one). This also leads to feeding homeless. In parts of North Carolina it is illegal to feed homeless but is very effective when you do. Homeless people are at risk of dying of starvation. They do not have the money they need to feed themselves. This is why you will commonly find homeless people on the side of the road asking for donations. By giving them money or food you are giving them the ecentals they need to live. Possible serves ideas Like said before, giving the homeless food and money can go a long way. It can even prevent them from dying. Taking time every day or month (whatever works for you) and handing out food or money can help save a person's life. Also donating to homeless shelters can have the same effect. The money that you donate goes towards food, clothes, bedding.etc.. It some of it can even go towards building more homeless shelters. More housing will pull more people off the streets and give them a second chance. Small things can go long ways
I believe that small things can go long ways. This I believe because in kindergarten I didn't really have an interest in much. I ran around the backyard, played with my toys, and would watch my brother play video games. The only interest I had at this time was swim. Soon that wouldn't be my only interest. I went to Brooks Museum Magnet Elementary school. Because it was a museum magnet it looked different than any other school I had seen. They would take their favorite art pieces, frame them, and then hang them in the hallway. It was hard to get your picture hung. The pictures in the hallways made the school feel more welcoming and happy than if there were none. I made you feel even happier when it was one of your art pieces. Back to the kindergarten thing; one day my art teacher pulled me outside the classroom. My first thought was that I was in trouble. I had been sent home with a chart slip already that year. But I soon found out that's not why she had pulled me out. She asked to hang one of my pictures in the hallway! I remember how surprised I was. I big grim broke across my face as I nodded in response to her question. I left school happy. I thought that was as good as it could get for that piece of art. Nope. a few days later I got a note home asking me and my parents if it was ok to hang it up with some other art from the school at a fair. I don't remember what fair. I don't think it was the state fair but that doesn't matter. What mattered was that i was proud of myself. This small accomplishment opened up a huge door for me. This helped me come to the conclusion that small things can go long ways. That one art project may of just seemed like one little accomplishment but it was more than that. Ever since I have tried to get better at art. I've gotten some much better in art since kindergarten. Going into art has even helped me meet some of my really good friends. Im thankful for that one day were that one painting of a rainbow fish got hung up in the hallway. Without it I don't know what I would be doing with myself. |
